The Future of M Cars?

BMW managed to surprise M cars fans alike a few weeks ago by revealing that there will be a Diesel, tri- turbo engine option available for their high end cars.

The 3 litre, 6 cylinder tri-turbo engine will feature in the X5, X6 and 5 Series respectively, and produce 376bhp achieving 0-62 in 4.7 seconds for the 5 Series (only three tenths slower to 60 than a M5). The X5 and X6 will get to 62 ‘in the low 5 second area’. Furthermore the diesel cars will apparently reach 44.8mpg and the lower emissions of 165g/km will save £625 on the price of road tax in the first year of ownership.

The X5 M50d will cost £60,325 and the X6 M50d £62,250. A price for the M550d has not been released.

So will this be the future of M cars? And is this a good idea? Well, each to their own. Having been in an X635d I can report that the plentiful 286bhp is already a fair amount and gets the car along very nicely. The 376bhp is certainly more than enough power in my opinion. Saving money is a huge plus point in my books. If these cars can reach the mpg and emissions levels claimed by BMW then these three models sound like a great all round everyday car.
